If you’re starting a business with employees in Alabama, you need to register for:

  • Alabama State Income Withholding Tax

Registration Steps

Step 1: Register for a withholding account number

  1. Go to the MyAlabamaTaxes portal (https://myalabamataxes.alabama.gov/_/#1)

  2. Click “Register a Business / Obtain a new tax account number”

  3. Enter entity type and Federal EIN; answer “No” for existing tax accounts

  4. Select Payroll Withholding Tax as a tax type

  5. Complete the remaining information, including contact and email

  6. Submit the application and print the confirmation page

  7. You’ll receive a Sign-on ID and Access Code by mail in 3–5 business days

Step 2: Create an ADOR login account

Alabama Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax

Registration Steps

Arizona has a combined registration process for state withholding and unemployment insurance.

Step 1: Register on AZTaxes Website

  1. Click “Enroll to File and Pay Online” under the Businesses section

  2. Read the welcome page and click Continue

  3. Fill in all required fields (red asterisks)

  4. Accept the Terms of Use and click Register

After submitting, you’ll receive two emails from [email protected]:

  • One with your username

  • One with a temporary password (check spam folder if not visible)

Temporary password expires in 24 hours. If not received, call (800) 352-4090.

Step 2: Set Up Your E-Signature PIN

  1. Log into AZTaxes (https://www.aztaxes.gov/Home/Page) using your temporary credentials

  2. Change your temporary password to a secure, personal password

  3. Set up four security questions

  4. Create an E-Signature PIN for future logins

Step 3: Link Your Accounts

  • Click Business Account Linking

  • Enter the required account info and PIN

  • Submit the request

Account linking may take up to 24 hours to complete

If you’re starting a business with employees in California, you must register for:

  • California State Personal Income Tax Withholding (PIT)

Employer Registration Requirement

  • Tax Agency: California Employment Development Department (EDD)

  • Trigger: If you pay more than $100 in wages in a calendar quarter

Step 1: Enroll in e-Services for Business

  1. Click the “Enroll” button

  2. Enter the required personal and contact information

  3. EDD will send you a verification email

  4. Click the email verification link within 24 hours to activate your account

🚨 If you don’t verify your email within 24 hours, you must restart the enrollment process

Step 2: Register Your Business

  1. Log into your e-Services for Business account: https://edd.ca.gov/Payroll_Taxes/e-Services_for_Business.htm

  2. Click “New Customer”

Colorado

Colorado New Business Registration Guide

If you’re starting a business in Colorado with employees, you need to register for:

  • Withholding Tax

Colorado Withholding Tax

Employers are required to register with the Department of Revenue as a Withholding Tax Agent to withhold state income taxes from employees.

  1. Register for a Withholding Tax Account

    • If located in Colorado: Register online via MyBizColorado.​

    • If located outside Colorado: Complete and submit Form CR 0100 (Sections A, B, D, E, F, and G).If located outside Colorado: Complete and submit Form CR 0100 (Sections A, B, D, E, F, and G).

    • Processing Time: Account number assigned immediately via MyBizColorado or within 4–6 weeks for mailed form.

Colorado Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax

Tax Agency: Colorado Department of Labor & Employment (CDLE)

Employers must register for unemployment insurance with the CDLE.

Registration Steps:

  1. Register for a UI Account Number:

  2. Assign Third-Party Access (TPA) to Check.

    • Log in to MyUIEmployer+.

    • Navigate to: Account Maintenance > Third Party Administrator Authorization

    • TPA ID: 500003641

    • Assign start date (must be first day of quarter: e.g., 01/01/YYYY).

    • Assign the following roles:

      • View Account Maintenance

      • Submit Employment and Wage Detail

      • View Rate Notice and Voluntary Contribution

      • Edit Tax Payments Update and Submit

    • Save changes.

  3. Once you have your account number, add it to Playground!


Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI)

Tax Agency: Colorado FAMLI Division (CDLE)

Employers are required to register and submit contributions to the FAMLI program.

Registration Steps

  1. Click “Log into My FAMLI+ Employer”

  2. Select “Create an account” via login.gov

  3. Complete email verification, password setup, and authentication

  4. Proceed with registration

  5. Once you have your account number, add it to Playground!

  1. Navigate to: Manage My Accounts > Manage Accounts

  2. Scroll to Third-Party Administrator section

  3. Search for and select “Check Technologies, Inc.”

Colorado Occupational Privilege Taxes (OPT)

Some Colorado municipalities impose OPT. Registration is required at the city level if you operate in these jurisdictions.

    • On the Delaware One Stop homepage, under Withholding, click Get Started.

    • Select Register as a Withholding Agent and follow the prompts.

    • Enter your FEIN, business name, and other business details.

    • Choose your Type of Ownership from the dropdown.

    • Enter your First Payroll Date.

    • Review all information and submit the application.

    • You’ll receive a confirmation upon successful registration.

Statewide Registration Overview

Washington uses a centralized portal, SecureAccess Washington (SAW), to access most employer-related agencies. You must register with each agency individually through their associated platforms.



1. Register Your Business & Obtain a Unified Business Identifier (UBI)

  • Go to WA Business Licensing Service

  • Use the Business Licensing Wizard to determine required registrations

  • Complete your application online to receive a UBI number (9-digit identifier)

  • The UBI is required for all agency registrations



2. Register with the Employment Security Department (ESD)

This is required for State Unemployment Insurance (UI).

Steps:

  • Click “Register your business”

  • Complete the UI tax registration

What You Receive:

  • ESD Account Number (9 or 12-digit)

  • UI Tax Rate, including the Employment Administration Fund (EAF) surcharge

You can mark this field as ‘Applied For’ if still pending.


3. Register with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I)

This is required for Workers’ Compensation.

Steps:

  • Go to the L&I Employer Registration

  • Complete the workers’ comp account setup, and obtain:

    • L&I Account Number (typically 8 digits, e.g. 12345678 or 123-456-78)

    • PAC (Participant Activation Code) for e-filing

4. Register for Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML)

Details:

  • All employers must report wages and hours for each employee.

  • Employers with 50+ employees must pay both the employee and employer portion of premiums.

  • Smaller employers pay only the employee portion (but may opt to pay the employer portion voluntarily).
