How to add parents or guardians to Playground

A guide to adding parents of new students and existing students to Playground through the Administrator Dashboard.

When you want to add a new parent or guardian to Playground, it's important to make sure they're associated with the correct students in your roster. The following guide walks through how to add a parent when their child is also being added as a new student, and how to add a parent to an existing student's profile.

Note: If you wish to solely manage guardians and turn off this ability for families, toggle this setting off in the Administrator Dashboard.

How to add a new parent or guardian with a new student

Start on the "Students" tab under "My School" on the Administrator Dashboard. Click on the the "Add students" button to open a dropdown menu and then click the "Add single student" option. (To learn how to batch add new students and their guardians, refer to this article.)

The "Add Student" pop-up will appear. The new student's name and classroom are required. If you would like to add additional information to the new student's profile at this time, click "Additional information."

A dropdown with additional fields will open; fill as many fields as you would like.

Then, to add a new guardian to the new student, uncheck the box next to "This student's family already exists." New fields for guardian information will appear; the guardian's name, relationship, and email are required. When the information for the new student and their guardian are completed to your satisfaction, click the blue "Finish" button to save and exit the pop-up.

A green notification will appear to confirm the new student's profile has been created.

How to add a new parent or guardian to an existing student

Parents, once they have activated their account, are also capable of adding an additional guardian to their child's profile. We encourage you to share this how-to article with your center's parents—having parents add, edit, and manage their children's guardians will help save your time!

If you would like to add a new guardian to an existing student yourself, start on the "Students" tab under "My School" on the Administrator Dashboard. Navigate to the profile of the student for whom you would like to add a new guardian by clicking on the student's name. You can filter your student list by class using the drop-down menu on the upper right of the table.

You'll be brought to the student's profile page. Click on the "Guardians" tab to reach the Guardians page of the student's profile, then click on the "Add Guardians" button on the righthand side of the screen.

An "Add Guardian" pop-up will appear. Fill in the appropriate fields and then click "Save."

A pop-up will appear to ask whether you would like to send a sign-up email to the newly added guardian's email. Click the "Send sign-up email" button—remember, a guardian cannot being using the Parent App without first activating their Playground account via a sign-up email.

You'll be returned to the Guardians page of the student's profile with the new guardian now in the table.

How to switch a guardian from one family to another

If you need to switch a guardian from one family in your center to another, reach out to [email protected]—we'll take care of the switch for you.

Remember that editing a family number from the "Edit Guardian" pop-up editor will update the number across all the guardian and student profiles associated with that family, not switch a guardian from one family to another.
